The Glory Days In the beginning, a few western brothers, who liked the game of golf and were intrigued by a Gamma Rho gathering, decided to organize a fraternity golf event in the mountains. The format was based on play at the great mountain courses, Banff Springs and Jasper Park Lodge. Over a few days we played both Banff and Jasper. Those were the glory days of fat wallets and low handicaps. These courses, of course, were designed by legendary Canadian golf course architect, Stanley Thompson. And so naturally we called our event the Stanley Thompson Challenge (STC). The intent, in the early years, was that our event would only play Stanley Thompson courses. Over time our horizons broadened and we came to play quality courses throughout western Canada. We also evolved from STC to STC/Connor Memorial, in honour of our beloved John "long gone" Connor, a splendid human being, much missed, and a passionate and skilled golfer. All honour!!! It has been far too many years since we played the classic mountain courses. Considerable sentiment exists for a return. Building on this sentiment, your planning committee is pleased to announce, with enthusiasm and expectation, that the STC19/Connor Memorial will in held in Banff, May 19-23. We will play the fabled Banff Springs Course but there are several excellent mountain courses that will fill out our schedule. Take a look at Kananaskis or Stewart Creek. Final course selections will be made closer to the date. Accommodations are booked at the Hidden Ridge Resort. banffhiddenridge.com/Condos have 4 separate bedrooms with 1 queen per, and 1 pull out. Pricing is approximately $170 per person per night. Discounted rate for taking a sofa bed. Very pleased to note each unit has BBQ and a kitchen. I look forward to continuing a strong "in house" meal preparation that les gars embraced so collaboratively last year in Sechelt. We will be able to offer some transportation assistance to brothers flying into Calgary. How much assistance will naturally depend on numbers but we will work to co-ordinate flights and pick ups as best we can. For the time being your planning committee is asking for expressions of interest, let's say by, January 31. No obligations just an indication. In, strong interest, no thanks, maybe? More details in the months ahead. If you have never been to Banff, an iconic representation of the magnificence of the Rockies, you must visit, at least once. It is an intimate town nestled in the splendour of breathtaking peaks. If you have visited Banff, consider one more trip...with your brothers....in the spring of 2023...at STC19/Connor Memorial. Your Planning Committee PS Non golfers are welcome. In Banff there will be lots to occupy your time. |
